An owner’s two-bedroom duplex apartment with two full floor rental units on the lower floors was created in the conversion of a four-story multi-family investment property. Limited by a fifteen feet wide interior and a common stair, constructing an additional stair within the duplex was not feasible. The integration of natural light, clever storage, and the New York Department of Buildings’ approval to incorporate the top two flights of the common stair within the duplex created a spacious layout within a narrow building. The connecting stair was opened and framed by lattice shelving on the upper floor. Both bedrooms were placed in the rear of the building to create open loft-like living and dining space. Three skylights were installed in the roof, flooding the third and fourth floor with natural light through the open stairwell.
